Throwback Thursday: El Mariachi – 1992
The Production budget for El Mariachi was only $7,000. Director Robert Rodriguez earned $3,000 of that by volunteering as a “lab rat” testing a new cholesterol-lowering drug earning $100 a day over the course of 30 days. Rodriguez has always been very forward with a lot of his filming techniques and it’s pretty cool to hear how he came up with a lot of the shots for the film. A few years later he would be able to make Desperado, which is one of my favorite action movies of the early nineties. He’s been pretty busy over the years making the Sin City and Spy Kids franchises, as well as starting his own TV network called El Rey. It’s incredible how far he has come in just a few years.
Starring: Carlos Gallardo, Consuelo Gomez, Jaime de Hoyo, Peter Marquardt, Reinol Martinez
