Throwback Thursday: Commando
If you ask me Commando is one of the greatest action films of all time! That’s a pretty bold statement, I know, but if you just look at the facts it’s pretty clear to see. Arnold Schwarzenegger hadn’t yet become a massive star but you couldn’t tell by the part that he plays here as John Matrix. The story and how it progresses is nothing special or original. Hell, they seem to re-make it every few years and call it a different name anyways. (Taken, and Stolen come to mind) The thing that I love about Commando so much is that it fulfills all of my action requirements in a major way. First we have the awesome, totally badass hero, with a simple name and a reason to fight (daughter kidnapped). Next we have a duo of villains; one being Arius, the Val Verde general who is trying to have the fellow assassinated, and the more popular Bennett. Bennett served with Matrix in the military and so he’s perceived as being almost as badass but we the viewers can clearly see he is not. So now we have a kick-ass hero and a couple of villains so all we need is a plot simple enough to bring them all together but one that makes enough sense as to elicit the slaying of about 200 men. Kidnapping someone’s daughter is such a crime. So there you have it. Commando is one of the greatest action movies of all time. So now check out some cool photos from the set and let me know if you think I’m full of it.
