5 Questions: Deadly Ransom
While The King of the Kickboxers may not have won our most recent Movie Kumite, the movie and its star Loren Avedon won me over.
After enjoying The King of the Kickboxers I had to ask myself how I was not more familiar with the works of Loren Avedon?
I was at Blockbuster all the time renting the latest action flicks back in the 90’s. Maybe I was too busy enjoying the films of Jeff Wincott and Michael Worth or trying to decipher what Olivier Gruner was saying to pick up one of the many Loren Avedon actioners of the time.
So I decided to peruse Loren Avedon’s filmography and Deadly Ransom jumped out at me (more on that later).
After viewing Deadly Ransom, I found myself asking more questions…
1. Has there ever been another action hero with psychic abilities?
Action movie heroes are somewhat limited in what they can be. More often than not they are either a current or former member of the military or law enforcement. Many times they are martial arts practitioners either professional or amateur. Sometimes they are a combination of those two categories. So when we learn that Loren Avedon’s character, Max Lightener, has psychic abilities it instantly makes what could have been just another special forces cookie cutter character stand out among the pack.
2. Did they stop and ask for directions?
At the start of the film Max and his team arrive on a beach with the sun high in the sky and shining bright. Max tells the team they only have 45 minutes to reach their objective. “45 minutes later” when they reach their objective it is pitch dark outside. Did they get lost? Did they stop and ask for directions? Did they grab lunch on the way? Or does the sun set really really fast in this exotic locale?
3. Have you ever judged a movie by its cover?
I know back in the day walking the aisles at Blockbuster or even to this day scrolling through the options on Netflix or Amazon Prime that cover art of a movie was a deciding factor to watch or not to watch. In the case of Deadly Ransom, seeing Loren Avedon hanging upside down on a zipline on the cover art was 100% the reason I picked Deadly Ransom over all the other Loren Avedon options I had.
And unlike movies like Laser Mission with lasers shooting down helicopters on the cover art or To Be The Best with Martin Kove holding an automatic rifle, Loren Avedon hanging upside down on a zipline is actually in the movie. No bait and switch tactics with Deadly Ransom.
4. Is the Bruno character supposed to be the Hawaiian cousin of The Giggler from Death Wish 3?
The main bad guy in the film is a man by the name of Bobby Rico (Brion James). Like any bad guy worth his salt, Bobby Rico has some muscle and that muscle comes in the form of a character named Bruno. Bruno is portrayed by Sidney S. Liufau. The Hawaiian native has been in such other films as Bloodsport III, Faster and Blade.
5. Have you ever wanted to see Brion James motorboat a woman?
Brion James is at his best when he is playing a villain or some sort of an eccentric character. Deadly Ransom had the good sense to make Bobby Rico an eccentric villain and allow Brion James to deliver a most memorable performance as a drug abusing mad man who holds a wealthy businessman and his daughter hostage so he can collect a 50 million dollar ransom.
You never know what Bobby Rico is going to say or do next including motorboating a woman. So if you ever wanted to see Brion James motorboat a woman, then Deadly Ransom is most definitely the movie for you.
