Scene of the Week: Lyon vs. Attila
On January 11th, 1991, the Jean-Claude Van Damme classic, Lionheart, was released in the United States.
I thought we would get the 25th Anniversary celebration started a day early by taking a look at my favorite Van Damme final fight, as Lyon battles Attila (Abdel Qissi)!
With so many quality final battles in the JCVD filmography why is the final fight scene from Lionheart my favorite?
First off, the underdog aspect is off the charts. Lyon is injured and people are betting against him (even those close to him). But I think the music used in this scene is what really gets me. The emotion it conveys is perfect for the scene and adds another level of drama to the proceedings.
Some things to look for while watching… the awkward hand clapping style of the rich guy that starts the “slow clap”. I have never in my life seen a person clap their hands in this way other than the rich dude from Lionheart. Also look for appearances from Bulletproof Action favorite Michel Qissi, a Bert Sugar wannabe (nice hat!), the Night Slasher from Cobra (Brian Thompson) and the pollution hating Ludvig Borga (not to be confused with the master funny man of the age, Victor Borge)
