Scene of the Week: Hard Times
When I think of tough guys, the mental image of Charles Bronson always pops in my head. If Bronson had a sensitive side, he didn’t show it. He exuded toughness whenever he was on the screen.
And while I prefer my Charles Bronson wielding a gun and blowing some scum away, he proved he could kick ass bare knuckle brawling style in the 1975 film, Hard Times.
Hard Times takes place in New Orleans during The Great Depression. Bronson plays a drifter named Chaney, who rolls into Louisiana and begins competing in underground fights to make money. He hooks up with a promoter named Speed (James Coburn) and the film chronicles their business partnership and the colorful characters they encounter in their illegal line of work. The film also stars Bronson’s real life wife, Jill Ireland, as many Bronson movies did over the years.
This week’s Scene of the Week takes a look at one of Chaney’s fights. WARNING! This is an old school, down and dirty fight. It isn’t the stylized, quick cut, type fight seen in most movies today. Just two no-nonsense guys trying to knock each other out and take home the money. Enjoy…
