Scene of the Week: T2 – Arcade Beatdown
Robert Patrick could never stand toe to toe with the action icon that is Arnold Schwarzenegger but in 1991 he beat the ever loving shit out of the muscled out Austrian Oak when they met in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. You could easily say that T2 is the greatest action film in history and I couldn’t even argue with you. It’s an absolute masterpiece. What makes it so freakin’ amazing is one of the things that is so clearly missing from all of the sequels; a credible villain. The Terminator franchise has always had “the machines” as the ultimate bad guy but Robert Patrick was the muscle behind it all. He put a face to the menace. His eyes alone stirred all sorts of fear out of viewers and his cold ass demeanor was more than enough to make up for his unspoken villainy.
The fact that Robert Patrick never exploded after T2 is kind of a mystery to me. It’s hard to watch his performance and not see that the man had enough talent to become a big time player in the action game but it just never happened. He’s definitely not the first actor to show extreme potential only to fizz out but when I think about some of the missed opportunities out there it still makes me sad to think about what kinds of performances we missed out on with Rob.
