Women of Action: Jurassic Park – Laura Dern
Many women can claim to be women of action but few can stand the heat when a trio of velociraptors start eating their weight in human meat.
While I think Jurassic Park was light years ahead of the rest of the films being made in 1993, I will be the first to admit that I was terribly disappointed in most of the sequels. The two characters from the original, Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie (Laura Dern), didn’t return for the second entry in the series and the entire franchise was hurt by it.
Sorry Jeff. The combination of Neill and Dern in the original built up the idea of dinosaurs before ever showing them on screen. And then when the dino shit finally hit the fan, it was Grant and Ellie who had the balls to get the kids to safety and not run and hide in a port-a-potty.
The film moves slow at first. Actually, it’s exactly the speed that it needs to go while the characters are all still relatively safe. That safety eventually wears off when the power goes out and the world reverts back to the Jurassic Era. Dinosaurs run amok and Laura Dern and her beau are the only two who don’t totally lose their shit. I don’t get into the Jeff Goldblum character as much as other people. He wasn’t that interesting in this one and the second film was mostly terrible, but I would still be down for a Laura Dern/Sam Neill reunion in a new sequel. Lord knows the current product could use a retool.
