Bullet Points: Freaky
I am a fan of movies where characters body-swap. It can lead to some hilarious scenes. Naturally, I wanted to check out Christopher Landon’s Freaky, which opens in theaters this Friday the 13th of November. I was fortunate enough to screen Freaky in advance. Let us see if it is worth your time…
- The Plot: A high school girl (Kathryn Newton) swaps bodies with a psycho serial killer. (Vince Vaughn) With only 24 hours to reverse the curse, can our heroine and her loyal friends save the day?
- Happy Freaky Day: I believe some will compare Freaky to the Happy Death Day movies. I can see why. Both have memorable characters you can cheer for, and both give off the same energy and vibe. I also hear a rumor of a potential crossover. I would definitely be down with it. With every film he makes, I am becoming a bigger fan of Christopher Landon. Keep making me smile, Sir!
- Millie and the Blissfield Butcher: Kathryn Newton is charming as hell as Millie. She is pretty badass when she becomes the Butcher. I am impressed by her range. Vince Vaughn proves he can do no wrong. This man acts his way towards awesomeness when he is both Millie and the Butcher. It takes talent to make believable body-swap movies. Each actor needs to be at their best, and we get this with Freaky.
- The Supporting Cast: Celeste O’Connor is Nyla. Misha Osherovich is Josh and Uriah Shelton is Booker. Maybe, these are not names you know, but each have heartwarming scenes. The bond between Nyla and Josh is unreal. The scenes with Vince Vaughn and Booker are pretty great. If you are in trouble, you want this team in your corner.
- The Action: You will understand how Freaky earned its R rating very early on in the film. If you like gory kills with practical effects, then you are in the right place with Freaky. We even have a chainsaw and a cryogenic freezer used as murder weapons. The opening is especially gory. I do wish the movie kept the pace of the beginning, but I still enjoyed Freaky about as much as I could. If you have ever seen a Happy Death Day movie, or you are a fan of the body-swap genre, then Freaky is definitely a movie for you.
