Ryan Shoots First: The Book of Boba Fett (S1 Ep6) “From the Desert Comes a Stranger”
It’s the penultimate episode of The Book of Boba Fett and this week Director Dave Filoni was playing a juggling act of all the various spin off shows existing in the Filoni/Fareu universe.
Last week there was much said about Boba Fett not appearing at all in the episode, this week he does appear but it is only in one scene. With that said half the episode does take place on Tatooine and it has direct ramifications on next week’s finale. I loved the episode but there is this weird feeling about what all this should really be called. It’s almost like we just needed a generic title for the Star Wars shows and maybe this week you get some Boba, maybe this week it’s some Mando and next week some other characters I don’t want to spoil in this part of the review. And oh boy were there some returns in this episode. Characters from across the width of film, animation and streaming all returned and some in significant ways. The ending alone left two questions about some returning characters that will be interesting to see next week.
The pace of the episode, despite all the jumping around, felt composed and controlled, I enjoyed the moments I was in and I feel like time was allotted properly to all the angles they were playing in the episode. Dave’s abilities as a live action director are improving, you can still see where his mind is thinking in animation but with each episode he directs it gets better. What he does nail though is the emotions and the moments in a scene. Some of the big keynote character moments across the SW TV-verse have been in his directed episodes. He gets how to do the meaningful stuff right. Towards the final 15 minutes of the episode the stakes between Boba’s army and the Pykes increased significantly and it should lead to a pretty amazing finale next week. I just really hope Boba is in it.
Observations (SPOILERS)
- Ohhh man Boba is putting a TEAM together!
- That was awesome Cobb Vanth is a hero
- Are we about to see Luke’s academy???
- Well that’s new
- Man Luke looks even better than he did a year ago.
- Ehh still not an X-wing Luke…
- Luke using the Force to keep Grogu along may be my favorite thing in Star Wars
- Ok I was not emotionally prepared for Grogu during Order 66
- Ahsoka too!!! What the hell!
- Dude Grogu has maybe the two greatest Jedis ever who get the force and what it is to be a jedi more than anyone training him. BALLER
- I just had a thought what if all of this is building up to some future trilogy with Grogu a the main character as an adult but its like 500 years in the future
- Meanwhile at Boba’s Palace
- The Jawas sporting that Krayt Dragon Skull as a hood ornament.
- Is that, nooo way
- Wow, that was awesome Bane look great the stakes are getting high
- Oh come on, beskar wearing lightsaber wielding Jedi is awesome!
- Of course this episode was directed by Dave
