Ryan Shoots First: Invincible (S2 Ep2) “In About Six Hours I Lose My Virginity to a Fish”
Back again is Invincible himself as he goes through that trademark hero moment. Showing up late to his high school graduation. Seriously, has any teenager with powers made their graduation?
But Mark is still trying to escape the aftermath of his father. It’s a unique twist on the hero kid thing as usually “stepping out of your parents” shadow to make a name for yourself is one thing but Mark has the extra burden of having to clean up literally and figuratively for his Father’s actions. We also see his mother trying desperately to keep it all together but not giving herself a space to grieve. I mentioned the Boys parallels last week but we see here again how this show also deals with the realities of being in a hero world but it’s done from a slightly less cynical view. We see that again this week with Eve’s storyline. She does the thing we always say heroes should do and stopped punching bad guys and started actually helping people. But even that is not that simple as she learns the hard way a hero’s greatest nemesis can be physics and building codes.
Invincible does a good job of feeling like a comic on screen. It reminds me of many of the great DC Universe animated adaptations where you can see multiple storylines being juggled and building towards something bigger. And yes we all like the big stories but each issue needs its own story to keep you buying and you can almost see the seams where one issue would end and another begin within the larger story.
Mark continues to differentiate himself by genuinely wanting to help people but to do that he needs to let go of his burden cause while his body may be Invincible his soul is not.
